Board Members Tour Pima Community College Healthcare Center of Excellence
By: Victoria Hannley, PCMS Digital Communications Manager
Members of the PCMS Board of Directors were given a private, behind-the-scenes tour of Pima Community College’s recently opened Center of Excellence in Health Professions.
This 80,000 square foot, state-of-the-art educational facility enables the medical workforce of the future to graduate with the skills to excel in their chosen health profession. With 17 different healthcare areas of study, Pima Community College has advanced technologies and simulations often not found in a community college. In fact, Pima boasts that their simulation lab is double the size of UA’s!
Students can practice real world skills on responsive mannequins (such as the pregnant responsive mannequin that actually delivers a (mannequin) baby), dissect a plant-based silicon responsive cadaver (when you make an incision, it actually bleeds) to augmented and virtual reality learning tools that go deep and in depth into anatomy. This impressive Center of Excellence is equipping medical techs and assistants as well as medical scientists with the 21st century skills required to compete and succeed.
The medical arm of Pima Community College graduates 800 students per year. Over the course of their time at Pima, these students have 1 million+ patient contacts. The benefit for our Tucson community is that these Pima graduates stay local. They are not taking their skills and training to other communities!
How can you get involved? Pima Community College’s Center of Excellence in Health Professions cannot keep up with their enrollment demands. They are seeking clinical instructors as well as clinical rotation opportunities within Tucson’s medical community.
